It has been said that Rathika Ramasamy, an Indian wildlife photographer, was the first woman from India to gain an international reputation as a wildlife photographer. She was born in the Southern Indian town of Theni, which is close to the village of Venkatachalapuram. At the moment, she calls Chennai home and works as a freelance photographer there. She began her professional life working as a software engineer, a role in which she was employed for a number of years. After that, she quit her job to pursue a career as a photographer instead. Her uncle, who was an amateur photographer in his own right, gifted her with her first camera, and she immediately began taking images of various flora and fauna. She went to Keoladeo National Park, which is located in the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, in the year 2003 and shot photographs of birds there. After that, she began making frequent trips to the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, where she observed the activities of a wide variety of avian species.
After that, she turned her attention to photographing of wild animals as a professional interest. She has visited the majority of India’s national parks, in addition to national parks in Kenya, Africa, and Tanzania. She has also gone to national parks in Bhutan. Her photographs of animals were featured in the exhibition that was exhibited as part of the Clean Ganga Campaign at the India International Centre in New Delhi in September of 2005. Her bird images were featured in the yearly calendar produced by Jawaharlal Nehru University in the year 2007. She was selected to be one of the Top 20 top photographers in India by the Birds of India magazine in the year 2008. She is the first woman to ever be honoured with this accolade. In addition to that, she teaches seminars and gives presentations on the subject of wildlife photography all throughout India. She has been a member of the judging panel for photography contests on both the national and international levels. Because she thinks India has some of the world’s most incredible flora and fauna, she enjoys taking photographs in Indian forests.
She just released a picture book titled The Best of animal Moments, which features some of the most memorable animal photos from her collection. In 2015, Rathika was presented with the Inspiring Icon Award by the famous Sathyabama University in Chennai. In the same year, she was presented with the ICF (The International Camera Fair) award for exceptional performance and accomplishments in wildlife photography. Both of these awards were presented to Rathika in 2015. The Photo Division Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in New Delhi is in charge of organising the 4th National Photography Awards, and Rathika is a member of the jury for this year’s competition. In 2016, Rathika was selected to serve as a member of the jury for the Siena International Photo Awards as well as the URBAN 2016 Photo Awards, both of which took place in Italy.
