Jiya Rai was recognised for her outstanding performance in swimming and given the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Purskar award, which is the nation’s highest honour for a citizen under the age of eighteen. Jiya, a student in the eighth grade, swam a distance of 36 kilometres in 8 hours and 40 minutes on February 17, 2021.
She now holds the record for the fastest time to swim across open sea. She began her swim at the Bandra-Worli Sea link at 3:50 in the morning and arrived to the Gateway of India at 12:30 in the afternoon to finish it. Jiya Rai is the current holder of the world record for the youngest girl with autism spectrum disorder to swim 14 kilometres in open seas. She set this record on February 15, 2020, when she swam from Elephanta Island to the Gateway of India, a distance of 14 kilometres, in 3 hours and 27 minutes.
