- Protasiewicz entered the office of the Milwaukee County District Attorney just a few short months after completing from law school. She worked in the office as an associate district attorney for the entirety of her 26-year tenure there.
- While she was employed in the office of the district attorney, she maintained her membership in the employees’ organisation.
- She was an active participant in several of the demonstrations that were held in opposition to Wisconsin Act 10, also known as the “Budget Repair Bill,” which denied Wisconsin unions many of their rights to collective bargaining.
- Her first attempt at campaigning for public office came in 2013, when she challenged the incumbent judge Rebecca Bradley for a position on the Milwaukee County Circuit Court bench.
- Bradley had recently been nominated to the position by Republican Governor Scott Walker, but still managed to win the election and take over the position. Protasiewicz finished in fourth place with 47% of the vote.
- The following year, however, another judge serving in Milwaukee County, Charles Kahn, proclaimed his intention to step down from his position. Protasiewicz made a bid for the vacant spot, and he was successful despite facing no competition.
